I purchased the gun after reading these reviews and am very happy with it because I was able to successfully repair a large patch in my ceiling. Even though it was my first time, the gun enabled me to exactly match the existing knock-down texture.
The only caution I'd make is to avoid taking others recommendations about extremely low viscosity too literally for your specific application. I was initially unsuccessful in matching the ceiling using the extremely thin viscosity recommended in these reviews.
For my particular project, a near pudding like viscosity was required. In addition, I had to add about a cup/gallon of #30 sand to match the existing ceiling texture. I'm only giving the gun 4* because the instructions failed to mention the use of sand for certain applications and I had to figure that one out on my own.
Otherwise, its quite easy to use, easy to cleanup and produces the desired results.
